Supporting Affordable Housing
As part of its commitment to civic development, Applied Materials and its employees provide leadership in creating opportunities for low- and middle-income families to move into their own homes. In Silicon Valley, Applied is the largest corporate contributor to The Housing Trust – a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing affordable housing in the region. In addition to providing financial resources, Applied convened California’s most recent statewide Housing Trust Summit to raise awareness of the ongoing need for affordable housing.
Earlier this summer, for the second year in a row, Applied employees, in partnership with customers Spansion, Advanced Micro Devices and Freescale Semiconductor, helped construct a Habitat for Humanity home in Austin, TX. A similar Habitat for Humanity project to provide decent and affordable house for those who need it most is being planned for Santa Clara, CA.

A Summer of Learning
While many teachers and students were enjoying a well-deserved summer break, others participated in Applied Materials-supported programs to gain skills and increase their readiness for the new academic year. Through the Industry Initiative for Science and Math Education (IISME) program, twelve teachers worked side-by-side with Applied employees in Santa Clara to learn more about the semiconductor industry. As the result of their fellowships, teachers hope to be able to better prepare students to understand the connection between the classes they take in school and the careers they may have in the future. By working to improve mathematics and science education, IISME addresses the need for a highly-skilled work force in the mathematics, science and technology fields.
In Israel, Science on Wheels, a project created by Applied’s Product Diagnostics and Control (PDC) Division and the Weizman Institute, attracted 3,200 students who participated in a national web-based science quiz called "Madahidon." Twenty finalists traveled from all over Israel to compete in two age divisions—elementary and junior high—at an event hosted by Applied Materials in June.
Five top science students from Shanghai, China, visited Silicon Valley this summer to get an up-close look at the region's engine of innovation. The delegation came as part of Shanghai's Future Science Stars program, which is run by the Shanghai Municipal Science & Technology Commission and the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. As the primary sponsor of the program, Applied Materials hosted the delegation's visit to the valley. The students toured the Maydan Technology Center, AKT manufacturing, the Intel Museum, the Tech Museum of Innovation and Stanford University. They also met with several Applied Materials executives and showcased their research projects, which earned them a spot in the Future Science Star program. Their talents emerged from a field of 1.5 million students in junior and high school in Shanghai.

Making A World of Difference
Employee volunteers from around the globe make a positive social contribution by donating their time to improve the communities in which they live.
Recently, employees from Applied Materials India (AMIND) mentored high school students in two Digital Equalizer Centers in Narayahpura and Ganur, teaching the students computer and Internet basics. These centers, sponsored by Applied Materials, are created in India's government high schools to increase student exposure to technology. The company opened its third center in Bangalore in late June.
Mt. Fuji received a clean up when Applied Materials Japan (AMJ) employees and their families joined with the Fujisan Club, a Japanese nonprofit organization that works to protect the environment surrounding Mt.Fuji, to collect garbage from the mountain’s base.
Austin employees dedicated weekend time to raise funds for the annual North America Food Drive by organizing the sixth annual softball tournament to benefit the Capital Area Food Bank. In addition, the site employees and their children participated in a fishing tournament to generate funds to help alleviate hunger in the region.

Applied Named Socially Responsible Investment
FTSE4Good has named Applied Materials to its index of companies that meet globally recognized standards for corporate responsibility. The selection criteria, which are shaped by a broad range of stakeholders including nonprofit organizations, governmental bodies, academics, the investment community and the corporate sector, focus on the positive efforts of companies and are meant to be clear and achievable targets for companies to use in developing socially responsible policies and practices.
The criteria cover a company’s performance in three primary areas:
- working toward environmental sustainability
- developing positive relationships with stakeholders
- upholding and supporting universal human rights
FTSE4Good is an index series for socially responsible investment (SRI) set up by FTSE, the leading global index provider. Independently defined and researched, FTSE4Good aims to set an objective global standard for SRI.
